Sexy New Things

I took a long weekend with my husband and two kids, a mini vacation before school starts, in San Diego. While I was contemplating my Monday blog post, a couple things happened on this trip that I thought were extremely sexy. Everyone has different things that turn them on and I have several, but during this trip I found a couple new ones.

I witnessed my husband change a tire for the first time when we got a flat after a day at the beach. He pulled over, took out the spare and got to work while my kids and I stood next to the car and watched. He changed the tire with ease, on the side of the road, in like 10 minutes and I stood there thinking...hello sexy.

Spending a long weekend in San Diego, I played at three different beaches, over three days and spent most of my time riding the waves on my new boogie board. I've always wanted to learn how to surf, but haven't yet. I say "yet" now, instead of "never did" because after this past weekend, I think I might just get around to it. I had so much fun. And each time I walked out into the waves, with my board under one arm, skin sun kissed, I thought...damn I'm sexy.

Let me qualify this by saying, normally I do not feel sexy in my bikini at all, except when my husband ogles my boobs. Then I feel like I can conquer the world...oh yeah compliments from my husband are sexy.

No a bikini is not a comfortable look for me, but I felt sexy walking into the surf. And I felt sexy when I magically changed in and out of my bikini on the beach under my towel like a pro.

So yeah my husband surprised me and I surprised myself. Maybe I was a beach bum in a former life with a grease monkey man, who knows, but I found a couple of new things I think are sexy.

Reviews-It's Time to Post

Recently, on the Writing Wenches blog, I talked about my approach to reviews and the different things I take into consideration when posting a review.

Reviews are important.

On 7/7/2014, I published Sweet Dreams. I have sold books on Amazon, B&N, iBooks and Smashwords. Now I am looking for those people who read Sweet Dreams to post their reviews.

Reviews are an author's bread and butter. Especially a newly published author. There is no reason for anyone to take a chance on an unknown author. That is why the review is so important.

It lets the potential reader know what to expect, how other readers enjoyed the book, and if they would purchase other works by this author.

It is word of mouth gone digital. Now that everything is online, readers looking to discover a new author will read the reviews that have been posted and take that into consideration before buying.

If the author is unknown, how do they find the book? Well maybe they saw something on Twitter, maybe the book came up in the "People Who Purchased This Also Purchased..." pitch at the bottom of the page. Maybe a friend recommended the book or the reader found a post on Facebook or a book blog recommending it when searching under books.

Who knows how they found it in the sea of books out there. The important thing is they found it. The first thing a potential reader will most likely do is to read the synopsis (book blurb). Next, they check the reviews of other customers.

The photo above is a snapshot of my reviews on Amazon, the first being my favorite. Why is the third not my favorite? It is 5 stars after all and the first is 4 stars. Well, I love the third review. It gives you an idea of the style of the book and the reviewer is now a fan, and I love that. But the first review, "Super Enjoyable" is exactly how I wanted my readers to feel after reading Sweet Dreams.

Now, I am all for the short and sweet review. I do not post long reviews of books I read and I get to the point listing a couple of details so that it is evident that I actually read the book. Authors love to hear positive feedback from their readers about which character was their favorite or which scene was the most engrossing.

The professional reviewers and book bloggers out there are great at leaving six paragraph reviews of how the book made them feel and what they like about the author and the story, without spoilers. And bless them, that is why they are professional reviewers.

I just want the people who have read and enjoyed my book to post a review, in the hopes that someone will read the review and decide to use that recommendation to purchase my book.

How do you leave a review?

Simple, if you purchase the book online you would simply leave a review at that online retailer's site. You can also leave a review on Amazon or on Goodreads or both. Neither Goodreads nor Amazon require that you purchase the book from them to leave a review on their site. They only thing they are asking for is a few details about the book so they can tell by your post you actually read it. If you are going to take the 1 minutes to post a review, you need to make sure the post is not just "Loved It". It should say something about a specific character or plot point without being a spoiler. To find the review button on Amazon, just scroll to the bottom of the book's page and click on the button titled "Write a customer review". Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

So here it is. I am asking my friends, family and fans, who have read Sweet Dreams, to please post a review of Sweet Dreams. Below are the links for Sweet Dreams on Amazon and Goodreads, to make it easy.

So I Published A Book-Now What?

So I published a book.

I am so proud of myself for actually finishing my book and publishing it. It was a great experience and I learned so much about myself while writing it.

Now what?

Well, now I talk about it. I market it, I ask people who've read it to please review it, but most importantly, I write the next one.

Yes, time to write the next book.

The best way to get your name out there and to sell more books, is to write more books.

Hey, I never started writing Sweet Dreams to make money, although if it becomes a best seller and then gets made into a film, I am not going to complain.

No, I wrote Sweet Dreams because I wanted to tell a story. I wanted to tell a story that would make you smile, make you laugh and make you fall in love with the characters. And I wanted to see if I could actually do it.

So now I am writing the sequel.

I also started writing a short story. A short story that will hopefully be part of a book of shorts or a boxed set in collaboration with my fellow Writing Wenches.

Oh, did I mention that I have joined a writing group called Writing Wenches.

We have a blog, which goes live today and can be found at http://writingwenches.wordpress.com/ . I will be contributing to the blog every other week and yes, we are putting together a book of short stories. Pretty awesome.

I am also thinking of submitting a short story to another company accepting submissions.

It's overwhelming, but exciting. I feel like every day, through one of my fellow Wenches or writer friends, I discover another activity I want to be a part of.
Right now, I am a noob., when it comes to writing. I recognize it and I embrace it. I only hope to grow and improve with each work I complete, learning as much as I can along the way. But there is also so much to learn about marketing, about using social networks. There is software and applications and all sorts of new goodies to help me as a writer promote and grow and well just get my name out there.

I feel like there are so many things I want to do and so little time.

I love it and I am really excited to be a part of it.

I also still read on a daily basis. If you want to be a writer you have to read. A lot. Before I ever thought about writing, I was an avid reader. I was a one book every two days, sometimes less, Barnes and Noble junkie. Just because I am busy writing, doesn't mean I don't make time to read. I have to read, it is one of the things I most enjoy. Funny thing is, it's also paramount to becoming a good writer. Ask any successful author, or read their interviews, since most of us are not lucky enough to know them personally. You cannot be a good writer without being an avid reader. You have to experience different genres, different styles of writing in order to find your own.

So now I read, I write, I work, I network, I promote and I learn. I learn from my successes, from my mistakes and from my fellow writers.

What an amazing, never ending journey.

What is your journey?

Life is short. Go out and live it.

Tolerance-Hot Topic

Ok, so I am a blogger that normally keeps my hot topics limited to romance writing. I am a newly published romance writer, but there is more to me than just romance.

The below statements are my own.

I consider myself an open minded, liberal democrat. I was raised Catholic and became Protestant as an adult. I married a Muslim man and we raise our children in both faiths. Now I should mention that I don't attend church regularly, in fact, I can't remember the last time I went, but I pray on a daily basis. My husband and I have never once had an issue over the differences in our religious or spiritual beliefs. An example of this would be how we recently celebrated the Ramadan holiday, a holy month for Muslims, in which they take time to fast during daylight hours. Ramadan is also a time to show charity for those in need, practice prayer and come together with family and friends in the evenings to break the fast each day. This has been my experience as the wife of a Muslim man.

This year my husband celebrated Ramadan by fasting and all of the above. I did not fast, but enjoyed the evenings when meals were shared. Our daughter, who has fasted every Ramadan since she was 8 years old and is now 21, did not fast this year, by her choice, which we respect. Our son, who is 10, fasted for the first time this year, only fasting 1/2 day each day, since the hours between sunrise and sunset are so long in the summer.

And you know what? It was all good. We celebrate all our holidays this way, getting double the holidays if you will, Easter, Eid, Christmas, Ramadan, etc. I think we have the bests of both worlds.

Now as far as world beliefs go, I am by far, no expert in any respect, but from where I sit, this is how I see it. Keep in mind that many of the below have several different sects, like Catholics and Protestants or Sunni and Shi'ite, you get the picture.

There are Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Atheists, Agnostics. Those who practice Wicca, Eastern Folk Religions, Tribal Religions, Spiritism, Spiritualism, Philosophy, cults and so on.

And there are others that don't identify with any of the above or something else entirely.

I believe in Free Will. Whether you are religious or not, the human race has Free Will.

Free Will, I think everyone can agree on, although there are always exceptions.
What is my point?

I'm getting there.

For argument sake, if everyone on earth believes the human race has Free Will, then why oh why isn't there more tolerance for the diversity of our beliefs?

You believe something that I don't. That is just fine with me. You have Free Will to believe what you want.

Now, for the point.

I don't understand, as the human race, why anyone would or could justify killing another human being because of a difference of beliefs. This has been going on since the beginning of time, I know, I get it's nothing new. But I don't understand it. I don't understand why, if you believe in Free Will, you would ever try to impose your will over another. For me, there is no reason for the violence we see in the world today.

If I can share my home and respect and love someone that was raised with a different belief structure than my own, why can't nations that boarder each other do the same. Why can't people living within a nation or the same city, of different beliefs, all show some tolerance for their fellow human beings.
You don't have to agree on a belief or how to practice it. Let them do their thing, and you do yours.

Why is that such a difficult concept?

Why are children becoming the casualties of war, waged by adults who don't value the gift that is human life?

Life is short. Life is a gift. We are lucky to be alive.

Why aren't people that have degrees and are smarter than me, figuring this whole thing out and saying enough already?

Why is it only in a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion movie that we see people finally putting aside their differences and coming together as human beings to help each other?

Why?

I am a citizen of the US and my belief has always been this is a county that was founded for religious freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to basically live your life and practice your faith as long as you are not causing harm to others.

I truly believe that any faith or philosophy or belief or lack thereof is personal. It is between you and God, or the universe or the earth or whatever, but it is your right, your human right, because of Free Will, to decide what that is for yourself.

As the human race, we have enough things to worry about without trying to impose our belief structures on others.

We have places in the world where human beings still live without clean water or food. We have places on earth where slavery of children and women still exists. We have people struggling to find a peaceful place to worship. We have people struggling to put food on the table or provide shelter for their family. There are so many people who don't have access to medicines. Families of all kinds struggling to get by on a limited income.  People looking for work. Parents trying to provide education to their children. Children, who don't have parents.

Why are we not helping our fellow human beings instead of killing each other over who has the "right" beliefs?

Is it all about power? What good is power if there aren't any people to exude that power over because everyone is dead?

Is it land? What good is land if having all the land means destroying the earth and humanity in the process?

Why oh why aren't the geniuses of the world having a conference and figuring all this out? If they are, why isn't anyone listening?

I mean, we learn how to resolve conflict without violence as children. The first time we hit another child we are told to use our words instead of our fists.

People in power, use your words!

Please use your words.

Words are powerful, they can do great things.

We share this planet and we are intelligent beings.

We are all human.

WE ARE ALL HUMAN!!!

The Generation Gap

The generation gap...

This weekend I attended my annual family picnic. It is centered around my grandmother'a birthday and close to my aunt's and uncle's birthday as well. We celebrate every year, the first weekend in August and this year my grandmother turned 90.

90! Wow, that is an amazing milestone to reach. You can only imagine everything she has been witness to in her life time.

How about the the fallout from WW1. Living through the WW2, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, 911...Ok, what else?

The civil rights movement, JFK and Martin  Luther King, the feminist movement, the Berlin Wall coming down.

Also radio, early film, tv, fax, cell phones, computers, the internet, the mind boggles.

Amazingly enough, when I was born, my grandmother's grandmother was still alive. That was 5 generations, there is a picture somewhere of us all. When my daughter was born, my great grandmother was alive and my daughter remembers her. She was a tough, tell it like it is kind of woman.

This weekend we had a photographer at the picnic who captured some photos for us including a photo of each of the 4 generations now together for this event. My kids were in the great grandchildren photo.

We laughed together. Played numerous games together. There was horseshoes, three legged race, watermelon eating contest, baseball, volleyball, water baloon toss and bingo.

And the 4 generations ages 4-90 all played and ate and enjoyed each other's company.

Lucky... I am truly blessed to have a family that makes the effort to come together every year and just be together. Some of my cousins came from out of state.

Every generation has their own experiences, but the truly amazing thing is when you can come together as one and share them.

Then you see the generation gap is not as big as we think it is.
